Bryan Kohberger has filed a petition seeking to withdraw his guilty plea in the Idaho murders case, arguing that he was misled into pleading guilty despite maintaining his innocence. Kohberger was convicted of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022. He is currently serving four life sentences after he pleaded guilty in July 2025.

In a phone interview with The New York Times, the man convicted of killing four students claimed: “he is innocent and was misled into confessing to the high-profile killings”.
As per the report, Kohberger said, “My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, must be withdrawn.” However, the 31-year-old declined to comment on any specifics. He refused to discuss the evidence against him or why he agreed to enter a guilty plea if he is innocent.
In his handwritten post-conviction relief petition filed in Ada County, Kohberger wrote that “justice was not served” and “unanswered questions seem to multiply with each piece of discovery unsealed.”
Kohberger continued, “Circumnavigated by a broken plea, the trial never provided the public the clarity conducive to closure, and justice shall remain abjectly miscarried unless that plea is withdrawn.”
He further cited “ineffective assistance of counsel during criminal proceedings,” alleging his defense team failed to disclose or review evidence that could have helped his case.
The guilty plea marks a stunning shift from July 2025. At the time, Judge Steven Hippler directly asked Kohberger, “Are you pleading guilty because you are guilty?” Kohberger answered, “Yes.” He did not provide a motive for the killings during the plea hearing.
Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and 10 years for felony burglary. The plea deal spared him the death penalty in exchange for four consecutive life sentences without parole. He was also fined $270,000. Kohberger is serving his sentence at a maximum-security prison in Kuna, Idaho.
