Danny DeVito has offered a rare glimpse into the bond he still shares with Rhea Perlman. Although the actors separated years ago, family life continues to keep them closely connected.

DeVito discussed Perlman in AARP The Magazine’s August-September cover story. The pair separated in 2017 but remain legally married, and DeVito said they have no plans to change that arrangement. “We’re always over at her house,” DeVito told AARP. “We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff.” He then summed up their current dynamic by saying, “So that’s a good relationship.”
DeVito and Perlman talk daily and meet for weekly meals. Their three adult children, Lucy, Grace and Jake, have also expanded the family, giving the longtime spouses more reasons to spend time together.
The Danny DeVito interview also revisited how the pair first connected in the early 1970s. Perlman saw DeVito perform in an off-Broadway production before they went out with a mutual friend. Shared interests in theater and movies quickly brought them together.
“We had a lot in common, and we fell in love,” DeVito recalled. He joked that their early domestic rhythm was simple: “I cooked, and she ate.” They married in 1982 and later worked together on projects including “Taxi” and “Matilda.”
The Danny DeVito relationship update echoes Perlman’s previous account of the separation. During a 2023 appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ “Wiser Than Me” podcast, Perlman said they remained “very good friends.” She acknowledged that reaching a comfortable understanding took time.
Family also runs through DeVito’s current work. Lucy DeVito stars in and produces the upcoming horror comedy “Drag” with her father and brother Jake through Jersey Films 2nd Avenue. Meanwhile, DeVito continues playing Frank Reynolds as “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” approaches Season 18.
The actor credited family and friends with giving him the confidence to keep taking creative risks. His comments about Perlman suggest their marriage no longer follows a conventional path, but their friendship, shared history and growing family remain firmly intact.
