Tom Selleck says the cast worked to keep Blue Bloods alive before CBS canceled it

According to Page Six, Tom Selleck remains frustrated by the end of “Blue Bloods,” revealing that the cast agreed to a steep 25% pay cut before the show was axed. He shared the details on a recent episode of Ted Danson’s podcast.

“Blue Bloods was a labor of love… I think for everybody,” Selleck said during Wednesday’s episode of the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. The actor, who played New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on the drama, said the star-studded cast took the reduction, hoping to earn another season.

“The real truth to that is in the last year of [the series], at our last family dinner, everybody wanted to come back. We’d already taken a 25% cut in salary,” he told host Ted Danson, insisting they had “done all sorts of things to keep the show going.” Even so, CBS confirmed the cancellation in 2023, and the 14th and final season wrapped in December 2024.

Selleck argued the series was still thriving, claiming it ranked sixth out of the top 100 broadcast shows in its final year. “Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on,” he continued. He also praised the drama as a rare workplace where egos never took over, noting that many productions “become miserable to work on.”

This marks the latest time the actor has publicly aired his disappointment over how the long-running procedural came to a close.
