Zendaya is looking back on one of the biggest challenges she faced early in her acting career. The actress revealed that many of her hairstylists on set had no idea how to maintain her natural curls. She spoke about how those experiences have influenced her beauty journey through the years. The star also shared how various hairstyles now bring back memories of various chapters of her life.
Zendaya says not every stylist knew how to care for her curls
In a new interview with Vogue about her partnership with Prada Beauty, Zendaya said her hairstyles reflect different moments in her life. She said, “My different hair colors and cuts are like markers of different eras of my life.” She also recalled struggling as a young actress because many people on set did not know how to care for her hair.
Zendaya explained that many young black women can relate to that, and she didn’t always have the right people to care for her curls. She said, “When I was younger, I was on television, and I had an experience I think a lot of young women, especially young Black women, go through, which was not really understanding how to care for it on set and not having the right kind of people looking after my curls.” Zendaya shared that the experience caused intense heat and damage to her hair. She said later he focused on repairing her hair and helping it grow again.
Zendaya also shared her reasons for going blonde in 2024. She was promoting both Dune: Part Two and Challengers at the time. She told Vogue, “That year, I had to figure out how I would differentiate between the two red carpets and make them feel really different.” Zendaya added, “That’s why we decided to go blonde — I had never been blonde before.”
After experimenting with different looks, Zendaya eventually embraced her natural curls again, continuing to treat each hairstyle as a reflection of a different stage in her life. Zendaya has been busy experimenting with her hairstyles throughout her films’ 2026 press tours for The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. At the London premiere on July 29, she wore long, voluminous hair and a white web-inspired gown.
At the Shanghai premiere, she switched to long, straight hair with choppy baby bangs and completed the look with smoky eye makeup, a nude lip, and an Atelier Versace SS16 Couture gown. She has been changing her hairstyle to mark each new chapter of her career.
