Barbie 2 has reportedly hit a major roadblock as negotiations with its biggest names continue. Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Greta Gerwig have yet to finalize deals. The stalled talks could put the highly anticipated sequel at risk.

The original Barbie became a massive box office success after its 2023 release. The film reportedly earned around $1.5 billion worldwide and received eight Academy Award nominations. It also became Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing movie.
However, reports from The Guardian suggest that the sequel’s future has become uncertain because of ongoing contract negotiations. Robbie, Gosling, and Gerwig have reportedly not agreed to terms for the next film. All three are represented by the same talent agency, CAA.
Gosling reportedly wants $20 million to return as Ken in the sequel. Meanwhile, negotiations with Robbie and Gerwig also remain unresolved. Gerwig co-wrote and directed the original film alongside writer Noah Baumbach.
Warner Bros. co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca addressed the negotiations. They said the studio had made “a series of big offers” to finalize deals for another Barbie movie. However, they acknowledged that an agreement had not yet been reached.
If Mattel regains the rights, another studio could potentially develop a new Barbie film. However, the new project could not reportedly use story elements from the original movie. Robbie, Gosling, and Gerwig would also be unable to participate.
The original Barbie was not initially designed as the beginning of a franchise. Robbie previously told the Associated Press, “We put everything into this one.” However, Gerwig and Baumbach have since reportedly developed an idea for a potential sequel. Fans may now have to wait longer before Barbie 2 officially moves forward.
