Caitlin Clark was asked questions about Cunningham after the Indiana Fever lost to the Minnesota Lynx 108-100 on Sunday.

According to TMZ, Clark declined to take a position on Cunningham’s remarks about transgender athletes in women’s sports. She declined to answer repeated questions from reporters after they continued pressing the issue.

Earlier in July, Sophie Cunningham said, “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

When asked about Cunningham’s comments, Clark said the issue was “way above my pay grade” and declined to take a position. She added that her focus was on helping the Fever win games and that the topic had not been discussed in the locker room. Clark also refused to answer a follow-up question, reiterating that she did not want to comment on the issue.

Meanwhile, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt during Sunday’s game and later addressed Cunningham’s remarks. Reeve also addressed Cunningham’s comments, saying, “I think both of us understand we have platforms. We both talked about wanting to, more than anything, educate.”

She added, “There are some things that we have in common, and maybe some things you differ on, just like any issues. I think it’s how you handle things. It was nice to be in person, for sure,” according to PEOPLE. The exchange comes as the debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports continues across the United States, with athletes, sports organizations, and lawmakers remaining divided on the issue.
