Senator Bernie Sanders has flipped the script on President Donald Trump’s recurring “communism” attacks. And he is using New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s policy agenda for that. This is reportedly to paint Trump as the one working against working families.

Bernie Sanders did not just defend democratic socialism. He drew a tangible line between governing for the many and governing for the few. “Trump cuts funding for childcare, Mamdani thinks that we should have free and universal childcare,” Sanders stated on MeidasTouch’s On Sunday show. “Mamdani is trying to build low-income and affordable housing in New York City. Trump is cutting funding.”
The Vermont independent argued that the Republican establishment has no counter-argument to these policy specifics. Instead, they rely on fear tactics. He noted that Donald Trump and his allies have simply “come up with this boogeyman of communism” to distract from their own unpopular cuts.
Bernie Sanders expanded the comparison to foreign policy, calling out a divergence that resonates deeply with the progressive base. He stated that Zohran Mamdani opposes “the endless wars that are being fought right now through Trump, as well as the extremist Israeli government and their genocidal policies in Gaza,” whereas “Trump supports Netanyahu.” The rhetorical question Sanders posed framed the entire debate: “Who do you think is on the side of the American people on these issues?”
The commentary comes amid a heated internal battle for the soul of the Democratic Party. Prominent progressives like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker have pointed to recent Democratic losses as proof that voters are starving for a more robust alternative.
However, the notion of a socialist takeover has been robustly rejected by party moderates. Representative Ritchie Torres previously acknowledged the energy of the left flank but downplayed its dominance. This tension has even prompted ultimatums of staying within the party or not (via The Hill).
By using Mamdani’s mayoral platform as a case study, however, Sanders is attempting to shift the conversation from scary labels to the substance of rent, childcare, and foreign policy.
