Donald Trump‘s Marine One helicopter was involved in an air traffic safety incident that drew FAA attention on Tuesday. The incident occurred near Ronald Regan Washington National Airport shortly after the presidential helicopter departed. Both aircraft landed safely, and officials said the situation did not appear to be a dangerous close call.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it was investigating the incident involving Marine One, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The helicopter carried President Donald Trump during his departure from Washington. The FAA said the aircraft did not appear to be converging. Officials also stressed the event was not considered a dangerous close call.
Marine One departed from the Ellipse near the White House around 2:33 p.m. Trump was travelling to Joint Base Andrews before continuing to Los Angeles. Reports suggest the nearby commercial flights had not yet been halted. That differed from procedures adopted after the 2025 Reagan National tragedy.
Sources shared Marine One and Envoy Air Flight 3742 apparently failed to maintain required separation. FAA rules require aircraft to remain 1.5 miles apart horizontally. They also require at least 500 feet of vertical separation near airports. However, sources said the aircraft were not moving toward each other.
Both Marine One and the regional jet completed their flights without incident. Another regional flight, Republic Flight 4700, was sent around as a precaution. The aircraft later landed safely after looping near the airport. No injuries or damage were reported.
The FAA reportedly planned to convene a Safety Review Team. The review will examine how the incident occurred. The White House did not immediately comment on the matter. American Airlines also did not immediately comment through its Envoy Air subsidiary.
The FAA strengthened helicopter restrictions around Reagan National after the January 2025 mid-air collision. That crash killed 67 people and prompted major operational changes. Commercial traffic is now typically paused during Marine One operations. Investigators will determine whether those procedures were properly followed.
