Speaking at the Red Rock Casino on Wednesday, Donald Trump paused his remarks on the “no tax on tips” policy to deliver what appeared to be a spelling lesson. “Nobody knows that ‘dumb’ doesn’t have a ‘b’,” Trump told the crowd sincerely, before congratulating himself for coining the term “Dumocrats” as an insult for Democrats.
The president applauded with his wordplay. “I can’t imagine I didn’t think about that 10 years ago when I started this whole situation,” he added during the Las Vegas appearance. However, this is not the first time Trump has workshopped the nickname in public.
During a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity in May, he spelled it out carefully. “Dumocrats. Because they’re dumb, I—they’re dumb. It’s D-U-M. I got rid of the B. So you’re only changing one letter, right? E goes, the U comes,” he explained.
Later that same month, Trump expanded on the insult’s origin at an event in Rockland County, New York. He pointed to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as his inspiration. “I was thinking about this character we have in the House, his name is Hakeem Jeffries, and he’s a low-IQ person, very low IQ,” Trump said. “I watched what he was saying, and what the horrible things he was saying, and I said he’s a dumb guy. I said, wait a minute, he’s a dumocrat, that’s how I got the name (via Washington Examiner).”
Moreover, during the Las Vegas speech, Trump also confused the political ambitions of Michael Whatley, telling the Nevada audience that “Michael Whatley should be your governor.” Whatley is in fact running for Senate in North Carolina, not for governor in Nevada.
