The creator of a new Netflix documentary about Bryan Kohberger shared her theory about the killer’s motive.
In 2022, four University of Idaho college students were brutally stabbed to death in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho. The victims were Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.
After Bryan pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder in July 2025, he was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. As part of the plea agreement, the death penalty was taken off the table.

In July 2028, the former criminology student filed a petition to withdraw his guilty plea. During a phone conversation with The New York Times, he claimed that he was “innocent” and was “misled into confessing.”
Meanwhile, the three-part Netflix documentary The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare examined the shocking case while prioritizing the victims. Recently, the director of the documentary, Skye Borgman, shared her theory about Bryan’s possible motive.
“The fact that [this] was the house that he chose,” Skye told Fox News. “This was a house that had five women living in it. The night that the murders happened, Xana Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, was over, but really, this was a house full of women, and it seems quite clear that he targeted it.”
The director continued, “He watched the house; he was around the house in the days, weeks, and months leading up to the murders. So, it seems pretty likely that he had a very low regard, if not hatred, for women.”
She added, “It’s all conjecture, but he seemed to struggle with his relationships with women. And we look at this incel movement and the question of whether or not he was an incel, and whether or not he didn’t like women.”
The incel movement, an online group of mostly men, seemingly directs anger at women because they can’t find sexual or romantic partners. However, in the documentary, FBI special agent Ed Jacobson, who was part of the murder investigation, stated, “We never saw evidence that shows Bryan Kohberger is part of the incel movement.” He added that Bryan “was very good at hiding his online activity.”
