Prince Harry is back at the center of another royal debate as attention turns to next year’s Invictus Games in Birmingham. A reported invitation to King Charles is now drawing fresh scrutiny over how the royal outreach became public. The Duke of Sussex has repeatedly signaled that he wants to improve ties with his father. One royal commentator, however, is questioning whether the latest move also carries a strategic element.
Richard Eden claims Prince Harry’s camp may have publicized the Invictus Games invite to pressure King Charles
Richard Eden questioned the publicity surrounding the invitation in comments highlighted by the Daily Mail. According to the report, Eden suggested Harry’s camp may have allowed details of the invite to become public in an effort to pressure Charles to attend.
That remains Eden’s interpretation, not a confirmed account of Harry’s intentions. Neither Harry’s representatives nor Buckingham Palace has said the invitation was publicized as part of a PR strategy.
The invitation has been discussed for months. Reports previously claimed Harry hoped Charles would attend and potentially open the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. Harry was criticized over the reported invitation in January, when commentators debated whether it represented an olive branch or placed the King in an awkward position.
The Invictus Games Foundation will hold the Games from July 10-17, 2027, at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre. The Invictus Games Foundation says the event will mark the competition’s return to the UK. Harry founded the Games in 2014 for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.
Harry returned to Birmingham on July 10 for the one-year countdown. The official event announcement said he joined veterans, competitors and supporters at the NEC as preparations for 2027 continued.
His relationship with Charles has also shifted since then. Harry, Meghan Markle and their children reunited privately with the King at Highgrove after the Birmingham engagement. People later reported that Harry would welcome his father’s support at the 2027 Games.
The father and son’s camps have also reportedly remained in contact following that reunion. Charles’ aides reportedly communicated with Harry’s team as both sides considered what could come next.
Buckingham Palace has not announced that Charles will attend the Invictus Games. Until that happens, Eden’s PR claim remains one theory about the public rollout of the invitation rather than established fact.
