Taylor Swift Took Action Against Donald Trump Using Her Song

A familiar Taylor Swift track briefly became part of Donald Trump’s social-media playbook before disappearing from the videos that featured it. The sudden silence has drawn attention because Trump-linked accounts have often poked fun at the pop superstar, even though she has previously made her political position clear.

The videos no longer carry the music. A Trump-linked TikTok post featuring Trump and first lady Melania Trump enjoying fireworks had used Swift’s August, while another campaign post turned the title of her 2012 album Red into a joke about Republicans. Both clips have since lost their sound (via The Guardian).

The move fits a larger pattern involving Trump’s social-media operation. The accounts have repeatedly placed popular songs over political videos, sometimes apparently to provoke the artists behind them.

Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo and Kenny Loggins have all opposed Trump-related uses of their music. Grande, for example, urged the White House on social media not to connect her music with what she called “barbaric” and “inhumane” content.

Swift herself has not publicly addressed these latest posts. Still, the episode lands against a much longer history between the singer and Trump. Swift threw her support behind then-Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election, prompting Trump to declare on his social-media account, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” He later questioned whether his criticism had affected her popularity.

Swift’s massive success adds plenty of weight to the debate. Her Eras Tour became the biggest-grossing tour in history, pulling in an estimated $2.2 billion worldwide, according to Pollstar. Her trophy shelf is just as stacked, with multiple Grammys, including Album of the Year wins for Fearless, 1989 and folklore.

Her music has also covered a lot of ground, from country-pop roots to full-blown stadium anthems. Hits like Love Story, You Belong With Me, Blank Space, Shake It Off, Anti-Hero and Cruel Summer remain fan favorites.
