Matthew McConaughey has a piece of advice for his son and Hollywood aspirant Levi. The father of three stresses that failure and rejection have to be taken in stride for a career in Hollywood.
Levi learned from his Oscar-winning father about committing to a performance
Matthew shared his hard-earned wisdom with his 18-year-old son, who made his Hollywood debut last year. The “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” actor believes that one should not shy away from failure.
He told E! News, “You’ve got to be able to be able to detail with rejection, that’s part of it, You’ve got to hopefully love doing it and love the process so much that enough ‘nos’ don’t matter. If not, it’s not for you, because I was taught, there’s no ‘help wanted’ signs in Hollywood.”
The actor admitted that it “takes troubadours and rebels” to make it in the business of acting, especially given the intense competition. He also imparted the no-BS version of what he has learned in his career: “I just try to push, to say, ‘It’s better to make a fool of yourself and find out’ then to leave an audition and go, ‘Oh I had that moment and I hesitated.’” McConaughey explained, “Make a fool of yourself. Fail more. Try and fail more. No one gives as much of a damn as you think they do.”
McConaughey also kept the choice of career open for Levi and his other children, Vida, 16, and Livingston, 13. The True Detective alum said, “I don’t know if it’s something he’s going to want to pursue as a career. But as we’ve done what we’ve always done, Camila and I will do our best to open doors and then after that it’s up to our kids to do what they do with it.”
The comments come just ahead of Matthew McConaughey’s newest film, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” where he plays mentor to his co-star Angelina LookingGlass.
