Whitney Leavitt shared her side of the story about leaving The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives following its fifth season. In an exclusive cover story with People, she said, “After becoming a mom, you learn a lot about yourself. I felt this feeling of ‘Who am I? What am I doing? What do I want to do with my life?’ because my cup wasn’t full.”
Leavitt said she found a sense of purpose with moms who were having the same experiences. She added, “We enjoyed getting together, relating with one another and putting ourselves out there [on TikTok] in very cringey ways. Then all of a sudden it started to become a business.”
While reflecting on the circumstances that led to Mormon Wives, she said, “I don’t think we understood the impact it was going to have. We went in [to do the show], in my opinion, very naive. It’s such a huge chapter in my life, but I felt like everybody knew that it was time for that chapter to end. Regrets? Plenty. But I wouldn’t change a thing.”
A group of women experiencing motherhood formed MomTok to create social media content. Taylor Frankie Paul shocked fans when she spoke about a “soft swinging” arrangement involving MomTok and their husbands. Leavitt and her husband did not participate in the arrangement. The controversy helped inspire Mormon Wives.
While talking about who gets credit for creating MomTok, Leavitt said, “It took all of us, because if it didn’t, then you would just have your own show. Sorry. But no matter what happens with who we are not following online or who we’re fighting with, this is us. No one else is going to be able to understand this experience.”
Despite her exit from the show, she believes that MomTok friendships will remain meaningful and that the community will continue to grow.
