Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her iconic role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries 3, over 20 years after the first movie. The 43-year-old actress, who made her debut as Mia in the 2001 original, said there is now a deeper connection between her own life and the character she is returning to play.

Speaking to People, Hathaway said, “Mia and I probably have very similar values.” With the original film celebrating its 25th anniversary, the actress shared, “I think that we want to see a world that’s full of equality and full of love. I think she wants love, and I want her to have love.”
Hathaway shot to international fame with her feature film debut in Disney’s The Princess Diaries, directed by the late Garry Marshall. At the Disney Legends ceremony at D23 on August 16, she reflected on what the franchise has meant to her. She expressed, “Throughout these films, we have grown up together. And I’m always so amazed at how deeply people have held these stories and these characters in their hearts.”
The Oscar-winning actress also noted at a different D23 panel on August 15 that fans still love quoting the movies to her. She said, “I have come to love being told to shut up. So, maybe tonight you could help me out with that one? ‘Me, a princess, beg your pardon. Shut up.'”
During the event, Hathaway said the team is working hard to make the third film worthy of the first two. “Being a part of the Disney family also means being a part of a legacy studio that deeply values the family audiences it creates for. It’s why being here today means so much. It’s why we are working so hard to get Princess Diaries 3 right,” the actress described.
The original The Princess Diaries premiered in 2001, with the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, arriving in 2004. The two movies have collectively earned more than $300 million at the global box office. The Princess Diaries 3 is currently in production. However, Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not return for the third installment.
