Eugenie shared the news on Instagram on Monday, Aug. 17. She also posted three new photos of Adelaide with her older brothers, August Philip Hawke and Ernest George Ronnie. Eugenie wrote that the family had enjoyed a “special, cosy and love-filled time” since welcoming their daughter. She said the baby’s name honors three people the couple loves and admires.
Eugenie also said that Adelaide’s name has a connection to English and Portuguese history. The family welcomed her in Lisbon, Portugal, where Eugenie and Jack reside part-time due to Jack’s work. Adelaide also has the middle name Elizabeth, in honor of Queen Elizabeth, who died in 2022 after a 70-year reign. Eugenie said the family holds her great-grandmother “close in our hearts.”
The name Elizabeth also appears among several members of the royal family. Princess Beatrice, Zara Tindall and Lady Louise all have Elizabeth as a middle name. Queen Elizabeth’s great-grandchildren Princess Charlotte, Lena Tindall, Sienna Mapelli Mozzi and Athena Mapelli Mozzi also carry Elizabeth in their names. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their daughter Lilibet after Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname.
Adelaide’s birth was announced on Aug. 4 by the royal family. Eugenie and Jack’s daughter was born at 6:20 p.m. in a hospital in Lisbon, weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces. Adelaide now ranks 15th in the line of succession, after Eugenie and her three children. Eugenie and Jack were dating for seven years before they were married in October 2018 at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
