Marc Jacobs is weighing in on Luigi Mangione’s unexpected influence on fashion. The designer says he would be open to dressing Mangione if his high-profile New York murder case reaches trial. However, Jacobs did not suggest Mangione needs much styling help. In fact, he seems impressed by what the defendant has already worn to court.
Marc Jacobs called Luigi Mangione a trendsetter and he would like to dress him for his upcoming trial
During Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test, the interviewer reminded Jacobs that Winona Ryder, Lil’ Kim and Courtney Love have all worn his designs during high-profile court appearances. Then, the interviewer asked whether he would style Mangione for his trial.
Jacobs laughed before answering yes. When the interviewer asked what he would put Mangione in, Jacobs replied, “I think he looks pretty good the way he dresses, actually.”
The conversation then turned to Mangione’s unexpected fashion influence. After one of his burgundy court sweaters became a viral talking point, Jacobs agreed that Mangione could be considered a “trendsetter.”
Still, the fashion discussion comes against a serious legal backdrop. Mangione became a high-profile murder suspect after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson died in a Manhattan shooting in December 2024.
More recently, Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges and admitted killing Thompson. However, he continues to contest the separate New York murder case.
His state murder trial recently hit a major delay after his lawyers raised a double-jeopardy challenge. The court removed the previous Sept. 8 trial date while prosecutors prepare to oppose his request to dismiss the state charges.
Earlier, Mangione’s courtroom clothes had already drawn widespread attention. His fashion choices even became part of the public fascination surrounding the Luigi Mangione murder trial.
For Jacobs, though, the answer appears simple. If Mangione eventually needs a designer for court, Marc Jacobs is willing to consider the job.
