Allison Janney has one celebrity text exchange that still makes her stop and appreciate her career. The Oscar winner says comedy legend Carol Burnett has been messaging her every day for years. However, the daily texts are not about Hollywood gossip or upcoming roles. Instead, the longtime friends have built a surprisingly competitive routine around Wordle.

During CNN’s “Coming Up” interview, Janney revealed that she and Burnett play Wordle together every day. As a result, she gets a daily text from the 93-year-old comedy icon.
Janney said the routine has continued for four years. Still, receiving Burnett’s name on her phone has not become ordinary.
“Every time, it doesn’t get old,” Janney said, according to People. She admitted that she still gets excited enough to tell herself that Carol Burnett just texted her.
The pair became close while working together on Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale”. Janney has long considered Burnett one of her biggest inspirations. In fact, she told CNN that Burnett was a major reason she wanted to become an actress.
Their Allison Janney Wordle tradition is hardly new, either. In a 2024 interview with TVLine, Janney said Burnett texted her every day about Wordle and Connections.
Meanwhile, Burnett has also discussed their friendly competition. During a 2024 appearance on “Live with Kelly and Mark,” she said the two were fairly evenly matched. However, Burnett also revealed that she had solved Wordle on the first guess seven times.
The Carol Burnett text tradition means even more because Janney grew up idolizing her. She has called Burnett “my idol” and said becoming her friend still feels surreal.
For Janney, four years of daily Wordle messages have apparently done little to make the experience feel normal.
