He wrote, “Very sad to report that Dolly Parton, one of the greatest Country singers, and far beyond, EVER, has just passed away. This is a true loss for millions of people. There has never been anyone like her, and never will. In her honor, I am lowering the American flag throughout the United States for a one week period beginning tonight at 6:00 PM. Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”
POTUS announced that the U.S. flag would be lowered for one week starting that evening. The White House reshared his Truth Social post on its official Instagram account.
According to Deadline, Parton will be one of the few artists to receive the honor, as it is typically reserved for the deaths of political and military figures or national tragedies.
Dolly Parton died at the age of 80 in Nashville on Tuesday. She had reportedly been facing health issues since last year. The singer was forced to cancel her planned Las Vegas residency in September before canceling shows in May.
The singer, known for hits including ‘Jolene,’ ‘9 to 5,’ and ‘I Will Always Love You,’ became a music icon after her gradual rise. She debuted with the 1967 album Hello, I’m Dolly.
She was married to businessman Carl Dean for six decades until he died in 2025. The couple did not have any children.
