Maggie Smith’s Massive Fortune Exposed Nearly 2 Years After Death — Report

Maggie Smith reportedly left most of her estate to her two actor sons after her death. Probate records revealed that the late actress had a net estate worth nearly £16 million. The details emerged almost two years after she died at age 89.

Maggie Smith left most of her estate to sons Toby and Chris Larkin

As per The Sun, Smith’s will revealed a net estate valued at £15,977,325. The actress died at a London hospital in September 2024. Her estate was detailed in probate records published nearly two years later.

The bulk of Smith’s fortune was reportedly divided equally between her sons. They were Christopher Stephens, who acted under the name Chris Larkin, and Toby Stephens. Both followed their mother into the acting profession.

Smith also left her West Sussex farmhouse to a family trust. She established the trust with her two sons in 2019. The property, Douglas Lake Farm, was where she raised her children and lived for more than 40 years.

The five-bedroom farmhouse reportedly included barns, a stable, and a vineyard. The property was therefore separate from the portion of her estate divided between her sons. The trust arrangement ensured both brothers remained connected to the home.

Smith’s full estate was reportedly valued at £16,003,613. Debts and expenses totaling slightly more than £26,000 reduced the final net figure. Her will also contained separate instructions concerning copyrights and royalties.

Those proceeds reportedly related to works she inherited from her second husband. They were to be divided among his children and Smith’s two sons. The arrangement included Philippa Maughan, Shaun Cross, Toby Stephens, and Chris Larkin.

Smith remained one of Britain’s most celebrated actresses throughout her career. She won two Oscars and earned seven BAFTAs. She also received four Emmys, three Golden Globes, and a Tony Award.

Younger audiences knew her as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films. She also became widely recognized as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey. Her performances helped create a lasting legacy across film, television, and theater.
