Eddie Murphy shared details from an unexpected encounter he had early in his career. In Netflix’s documentary Being Eddie, the 64-year-old comedian describes an incident from the night he turned 21. The comedian recalled running into Hollywood icon Yul Brynner and his wife during the celebration at New York’s Studio 54.
Murphy said, “Yul Brynner, ‘Ten Commandments,’ he was with his wife and he was like, ‘How would you like to go back to my apartment with my wife and I and party?’ And I was like, ‘Nah, I’m cool!’” Years later, he recalled noticing Brynner’s wife smiling during the exchange, leading him to question what the couple had actually planned. He noted, “And I realized as I got older, his wife was smiling. Did he want me to go f**k his wife?” (via Fox News)
Murphy joked that the incident could have ended a lot differently if he had accepted the offer. He said, “The story would [have] ended better.” The comedian further added, “You know, ‘Yeah, I went back to Yul Brynner’s and f***ed his wife, and he was watching me going, ‘Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!’” Brynner, best known for his performance in The King and I, died in 1985 after battling lung cancer.
The documentary, Being Eddie, offers a wide-ranging look at Murphy’s career and personal life. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
