John Cena discusses his 2024 Oscars strip stunt
John Cena discussed his nearly nude stunt at the 2024 Oscars during a December 2025 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Recalling the moment he presented the Best Costume Design award while apparently naked, Cena joked, “The card was so small,” referring to the oversized envelope used to cover himself. He wore only Birkenstocks and held the card in front of him on stage.
Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024, revealed behind-the-scenes details about the segment’s compliance with broadcast standards. “This is not something that’s on tape that we can blur later if something pops out,” Kimmel said. He emphasized the network’s concern over potential exposure, which led to extensive negotiations.
Kimmel shared that a larger card was made for the bit. Cena confirmed, “Yes. You can’t show b-hole.” Kimmel replied, “That’s right! That’s one of the biggest rules, the number one rules at the Oscars.” Cena added, “Yeah, can’t show the exit at all,” to which Kimmel jokingly stated, “90 years ago they put that rule in place.”
Cena said, “I had my b-hole taped.” Kimmel mentioned there was “a lot of sweating going on” from the team ensuring nothing went wrong. He added that Standards and Practices visited Cena’s greenroom “a lot” before the live segment to verify everything was secure. Photos taken backstage after the event showed Cena wearing a modesty pouch resembling underwear, which covered both the front and back. Despite appearing exposed, he had concealed coverage in place.
Cena humorously described his willingness to “go out there with my incredibly underwhelming, odd-shaped penis just in the wind,” to which Kimmel responded, “I heard a different adjective other than ‘underwhelming’, to be honest.”
