Sharna Burgess Reacts to Rumors of DWTS Backstage ‘Toxicity’

Dancing with the Stars alum Sharna Burgess is denying any behind-the-scenes “toxicity” at her former workplace. The professional dancer responded to a fan question during a Q&A session on her Instagram Stories.

When a fan asked, “What do you think DWTS toxic means?,” Sharna quickly denied any backstage toxicity.

“I’ve never heard this,” she replied, blaming online haters. “It’s certainly not the show itself or the people on it. Gosh, I hate even seeing those two words together … But yeah the online hate is just another level these days.”

Sharna Burgess says any toxicity on Dancing with the Stars isn’t “the show itself or the people on it”

“On the flip side so is the online love and adoration,” she added. “It’s the yin and yang … the balance I guess. Where there are more people that love something, there will also be more people that don’t.”

Ironically, Sharna partnered controversial Season 27 winner Bobby Bones. Bobby might not have been the best dancer on the season, but he was certainly the most popular, earning enough fan votes to win him the Mirrorball Trophy. Sadly, Bobby was so hurt by the ongoing criticism, especially comments made by former DWTS host Tom Bergeron, that he recently sent his trophy “back to ABC.” Tom has since apologized.

Bobby responded to Tom’s comments in a November 12 TikTok video. “I try not to get my feelings hurt,” Bobby said, “but this was hurtful … [It wasn’t] what was said, but really who said it.” Prior to his comments, Bobby had “really like[d]” and “admire[d]” the show host, which carried an extra sting.

“I didn’t even wanna be on … Dancing with the Stars,” Bobby confessed. “They asked me to go on the show … Am I supposed to not show up and work hard?”

Though the radio and television personality won the season fair and square, he still calls the “amount of hate” he still gets years later “crazy.” In addition to Tom, current show host Julianne Hough just can’t seem to let it go and continues to bring up his name.

Dancing with the Stars Season 34 is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
