Reality TV fans may tune in to Netflix’s Owning Manhattan for the enviable real estate, but they stay for the intricate social dynamics between the cast. Ryan Serhant’s brokerage is made up of a group of ambitious agents who happen to be as talented at creating drama as they are at selling real estate. And while Ryan is the head honcho, that hasn’t stopped him from entangling himself in the personal lives of his team.
Reality Tea had the chance to chat with Ryan at the Season 2 premiere of Owning Manhattan, where he spoke about the difficult balance between being a boss and a friend to his agents.
Ryan Serhant on balancing being a boss and friends with Owning Manhattan agents
In a scene from Season 2, Ryan offers some advice to agent Chloe Tucker Caine after watching her juggle her two competing passions — real estate and musical theatre. In that moment, he isn’t just her boss; he’s a friend making sure she isn’t stretching herself too thin. We asked Ryan if he ever struggles with the balance of being a boss and a friend to his employees.
“I struggle [with that balance] everyday because I am them,” he told us. “I’m a CEO because I started a company, not because I was hired to be one. I’m an agent just like all of them are.”
“I tell everyone at this company, you don’t work for me, we all work together. We’re in this as one,” he continued. “[We] move as one, win as one, dominate as one … All our meetings are together. I think that’s really influenced how the entire organization moves together.”
Ryan also spoke about what fans can expect from Season 2.
“Season 2 is incredibly raw. At times, uncomfortable,” he shared. “It is very, very, very vulnerable. It’s also a beautiful show. It’s a love letter to New York City, and a love letter to anyone that has had to wake up every single day and put their best foot forward … And just hope that one of the doors they go through is an amazing opportunity.”
Owning Manhattan is available to stream on Netflix.
