For her “Saturday Night Live” promo video alongside Cher and Bowen Yang, Ariana Grande took the stage in an archival Bob Mackie gown worth $3,840. The singer took on “SNL” hosting duties for the third time on December 20. She is currently on the promotional tour for her film, “Wicked: For Good.”
Ariana Grande wows in Bob Mackie for ‘SNL’
Ariana Grande’s fashion game has always been at the top, and her new “SNL” look in the custom Bob Mackie gown is more proof of that. The chevron-striped halter-neck gown featured the fall hues of yellow, brown, and orange. Criss-cross halter straps made up the bodice, leaving the back open. The dress had an empire waist and an A-line skirt. It came with a matching shawl and a sheer kaftan.
The gown is more than half a century old, as it was originally worn by the comedy legend, Carol Burnett, in 1973. Burnett had donned the dress for the opening monologue of “The Carol Burnett Show” season 6 episode 23. She had only chosen to wear the dress, while Grande also had the shawl draped across her arms.
The Grammy winner’s stylist, Law Roach, sourced the dress from Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills earlier this month at the “Bold Luxury: Bob Mackie, Stage Glamour & The Couture Edit” auction. As per Julien’s Auctions’ website, the dress was sold for $3,840. The “Wicked” star kept her makeup bronzed and glowy, courtesy of makeup artist Michael Anthony. Meanwhile, hairstylist Alyx Liu styled her hair in a side-part midi-bun.
Mackie designed approximately 17,000 outfits for “The Carol Burnett Show” over its 11-year run. He also designed many iconic outfits for Cher. In fact, the design that sold for the highest price at the auction was a sequined dress from Mackie that Cher had worn in 1978. Grande pulling an archival look by Mackie is not only a tribute to Carol Burnett, but also a nod to “SNL” guest Cher.
