Sydney Sweeney has worn a lot of eye‑catching looks this year, but she recently revealed that the part she loves most about red carpet prep has nothing to do with the actual carpet and everything to do with her moodboards. In Sweeney‘s process, everything starts long before she is in the dress or the hair chair. In that, she likes building out moodboards — simple, visual boards she puts together with her team — and says that’s where most of the fun happens.

Talking exclusively to PEOPLE for her American Eagle campaign, Sydney Sweeney said, “I love making moodboards, and I love when my team makes moodboards, too.” The actor explained that she is a pretty casual dresser, but getting ready for big events lets her tap into a different side of herself. Hence, making moodboards is something she now does every time she has a press tour or a major appearance coming up.
Sweeney explained that she makes her own board first so her team has an idea of what she wants. Then her makeup artist, Melissa Hernandez, adds one for makeup ideas, while her hairstylist, Glen “Coco” Oropeza, brings one for hair, and stylist Molly Dickson assembles inspiration for the clothes.
They all look at everything together and figure out what feels right. Sweeney admitted she enjoys this brainstorming more than the actual moment when she is on the carpet. She likes seeing the different images, references, and old photos they pull in, calling the experience “really fun” and describing the boards almost like little art pieces.
And once the event is over, Sweeney goes right back to her usual look, changing as soon as she gets the dress off. Jeans and a T‑shirt are still what she wears the most, even though she will switch up the outfit with different belts, sunglasses, or shoes. She said it’s what makes her feel the most like herself.
Sweeney’s red carpet appearances look picture-perfect, but she made it clear that making the moodboards is what she enjoys.
