Actor Elijah Wood’s new Skittles Super Bowl ad’s unique format won’t be airing on TV. The spot will be livestreamed during the Super Bowl on the brand’s social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, at @skittles.
The Lord of the Rings star says he is “a giant Skittles ad fan.” Although Elijah says he’s “not a massive sports fan,” he does like watching the NFL’s championship game for the drama. “There’s an underdog generally, hopefully, and that’s when it gets interesting, so I tend to focus on that. But really, truthfully, I like to watch on that day specifically for the ads because the ads are always so interesting and surprising.”

The Skittles commercial will be filmed at the winning fan’s home on February 8, and Elijah will be on the lawn performing live. He was intrigued by the ad’s “audacity.” Further, the self-described Skittles fan added, “This idea of performing a live ad on someone’s lawn at some random place in the United States was just really thrilling and fun. And also a little scary, we’ve got to deliver.”
In a People interview, Elijah describes the ad. His character is a magical creature that delivers Skittles every time a horn blows. Every time the teen blows the horn, he is removed from everyday life. It’s sad that “he’s just locked into this fate of having to deliver Skittles with this horn blast,” Elijah notes.
He describes the candy ads as humorous, quirky and unusual. “There’s a sort of tinge of tragedy with a lot of their characters. And I just feel like they take really wild risks, they don’t play by any rules in terms of how you’re supposed to be and I think that’s what makes their ads so fun and I think what makes the brand so fun,” he explained.
