Louis Tomlinson’s new album “How Did I Get Here?” hits shelves and streamers today. and a new album track appears to pay tribute to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne.
Liam died on October 16, 2024, as a result of a fall from his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Before his passing, Liam spoke out about his mental health struggles while in the spotlight, leading to substance abuse.

In his new song “Dark To Light”, Louis reflects on a profound loss and a missed opportunity to help someone. The lyrics appear to allude to the events of the last few years for the former bandmates. Additionally, Liam had a tattoo on his chest that read, “where dark meets light.”
“It’s over before it ends / Why doesn’t anybody tell you that?” the song begins. “No phoenix in the flames / There’s only empty photographs / Is there anything that I can do?“
After reflecting on his grief, Louis goes on to wonder if he could’ve saved Liam, possibly from his struggles with mental health and addiction, which Liam had been open about in interviews prior to his death.
In the days following Liam’s death in October 2024, Louis paid tribute to his former bandmate. “I am beyond devastated to be writing this but yesterday I lost a brother,” he began. Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul,” Louis wrote in an Instagram post.
“I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye,” he continued. “I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life.”
