When you’re as big as Harry Styles, you can have access to some of the biggest events. While the pop singer is usually the main attraction for big occasions, he stumbled upon a massive moment viewed by countless people last year.
The former One Direction frontman took a break from music in 2025 and travelled during his hiatus. Among the biggest moments he witnessed while on leave was the inauguration of a new pope. In a surprising result, Cardinal Robert Prevost, was named the new Pope following the death of Pope Francis in April. He is now known as Pope Leo XIV. Harry Styles explains why he was in Vatican City during the new Pope reveal
As you might expect, massive crowds gathered in the Vatican in anticipation of a new Pope’s coronation. Harry happened to be present at that time on May 8. In an interview on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast with Greg James, the music superstar explained how he managed to catch the big occasion. “I was getting a haircut in Rome. Then I just heard all these people start shouting ‘Habemus Papam!’ and people just started running down the street,” he said.
His barber stopped cutting his hair after remarking that there is a new Pope. Harry says that he was a mere five-minute walk from St. Peter’s Square at the time. He rushed over to await the news. While he didn’t get the same kind of attention he’s used to, Harry was spotted by someone in the crowd who snapped a pic of him that went viral online.
Harry had been on the road for two years, performing concerts around the globe as part of his Love On Tour. He’ll be back to that later this year for a new tour called Together, Together. That tour will see him break his old record of consecutive shows at Madison Square Garden. He’s booked to do 30 shows at that venue, twice as many as he had in 2022.
