The deteriorating condition of Bruce Willis is a blessing and a curse. That’s how his wife Emma described the Die Hard actor these days as the two cope with his dementia. In 2022, Bruce officially retired from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia. That disease causes damage to the brain, which controls language expression and comprehension.
His family shared that he had frontotemporal dementia the following year. Emma has served as his caregiver throughout what has been a difficult time for the action star and his family.

The new normal for Bruce, given his condition, comes as a relief to his wife. Speaking exclusively to People, Emma says that Bruce “never connected the dots that he had this disease.” She adds that “I’m really happy that he doesn’t know about it.”
That’s normal when you’re going through what Bruce is. The Cleveland Clinic says that for those in that state, they typically can’t recognize one or more health conditions they have. While some may characterize what he is dealing with as denial, Emma insists that it’s simply his brain changing.
Not knowing you don’t have dementia is just one of the issues he could be dealing with. Other symptoms of his condition may include difficulty walking, difficulty swallowing, and muscle spasms. Emma says for now, he’s still very present in his body.
She shares that Bruce has a way of connecting with her and their children, which might not be the same as others would, but says it’s still very beautiful. Bruce and Emma have two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn.
Last summer, it was revealed that Bruce was living in a second home separate from his wife and kids. Emma said the decision was in their kids’ best interests. She took a lot of heat for that choice but has stood by saying Bruce would have done the same for her.
