Choosing a godparent is one of the most meaningful decisions a parent makes. It is akin to choosing someone who will be a support system for your child throughout their life. It reflects deep trust, closeness, and hope. Although many parents turn to close friends or family members for the role, for some people, like Halle Berry, this choice comes from far more personal and unexpected places. She has two children, i.e., daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry and son Maceo Robert Martinez.
Halle Berry opens up about choosing her teacher as her kids’ godmother
In a recent interview with The Cut, while promoting her new film “Crime 101,” Halle Berry discussed the story behind choosing an extremely unexpected godmother for her children. She also reflected on her journey as a mother and woman in her late 50s, opening up about all the moments that make this phase all the more important. She also discussed how she is still close with her elementary school teachers, and one of them is even the godmother of her two adorable kids.
Talking about this, Halle Berry said, “I had a teacher, Yvonne Sims, who is still a close friend and the godmother to both of my kids, who was one of the only two Black teachers at the school. She got me to understand early on that nothing happens to you; it happens with you.” Berry also added that she taught her, “If you don’t take responsibility for your part, you will make the same mistake again and again…until you do.”
This connection honestly shows how big an influence a teacher can have on a child’s life, outside the classroom and on report cards. Halle Berry’s unexpected decision shows how people who shape us in early life actually end up mattering more when we grow up. No wonder the “Catwoman” actor wants Yvonne Sims to influence the next generation as well.
