On an episode of Royal Exclusive, royal biographer Dr. Andrew Lownie discussed the fallout around ex-Prince Andrew and what it means for the future under Prince William and Kate Middleton. During the conversation, Lownie claimed that the couple never had much time for Andrew on a personal level. Moreover, he suggested they saw the danger coming much before the palace treated it as a serious problem, saying, “I think William was probably on to this very early.”
Lownie argued that William wanted the issue dealt with sooner rather than later. He claimed that William shows less sentiment than King Charles when it comes to family problems and the damage they can cause, and described the mood inside the family around Andrew.
The royal author speculated, “And I think he and Katherine rumbled Andrew,” adding that “they didn’t like Andrew.” He went on to suggest that “Andrew was always a joke in the family because of his behavior,” claiming that the future King and Queen looked ahead and saw what Andrew could do to the royal brand.
Lownie said that the family should have “cut him loose at the right time.” According to Lownie, ex-Prince Andrew’s issue goes beyond personal feelings for Prince William and Kate Middleton, and he frames it as a test of judgment and public standards — the exact things the Waleses rely on as they move closer to the top of the royal household.
