Nancy Guthrie’s Pacemaker Technology Being Explored by Investigators

Investigators may have discovered an alternative way to find Nancy Guthrie. The mother of three is still missing, with thousands of potential leads being looked at. She is 84 and said to be in need of her medication.

It’s believed that she was kidnapped at her home in Tucson, Arizona, with security footage showing someone in a mask at her door. Nancy has a pacemaker to help with her heartbeat. That technology may prove key to tracking her down.

Nancy’s pacemaker could benefit not only her. According to authorities, her device is being used as a “signal sniffer.” If successful, it could locate the device using its Bluetooth technology. In an exclusive interview with People, Dr. Laurence Epstein cautions that “a pacemaker is not a GPS chip.” As such, when the device isn’t in close proximity to the pacemakers for more than 24 hours, “it’s no longer connected.”

In Nancy’s situation, her pacemaker was linked to her smartphone. Unfortunately, that connection was lost on February 1st. That said, her pacemaker continues to function normally, according to Laurence. He says it doesn’t require the connection to work.

It has been over a month since Nancy went missing. Her daughter, Savannah, offered a $1 million reward for anyone with information that could help. The FBI put together a description of the alleged kidnapper from security footage they’ve pulled from Nancy’s doorbell camera. He’s described as a man with an average build, wearing a black backpack.

According to the doctor, there have been great advancements in pacemaker technology. That includes remote monitoring, which he says has come a long way. Instead of waiting up to three months to find out if there’s a problem with the wire, he says they can now know within 24 hours.
