Donald Trump Blames DHS Shutdown on Democrats Despite Republican Control

President Donald Trump is pointing fingers at Democrats as the Department of Homeland Security shutdown stretches into its second month, creating growing disruptions at airports across the country. Despite Republicans holding majorities in the House and Senate along with the presidency, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to place full responsibility on the opposing party.

With the shutdown now entering week five, Donald Trump launched a series of attacks against Democrats. The president accused them of causing “chaos at the airports” and labeling them “lunatics” for their negotiating positions. He insisted Democrats were “FULLY TO BLAME” for the standoff and warned they “must pay a big price” in the midterm elections.

The shutdown has been in place since mid-February, following lawmakers’ failure to reach an agreement on funding the Department of Homeland Security. The latter oversees the Transportation Security Administration. The situation has worsened significantly since then, with thousands of TSA employees missing their first full paycheck last week. Officials now express growing concern that mounting airport chaos could potentially lead to some airport closures.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer pushed back against the president’s characterization, stating that Democrats were “trying to move a little bit” in negotiations. However, he argued the White House had refused to compromise on core issues driving the stalemate. “The key issues of warrants when you bust in someone’s house, the key issue of identity of police, no masks, they haven’t budged on those, they’ve got to get serious,” Schumer told reporters.

The dispute traces back to public anger over DHS enforcement actions, particularly following the deaths of two U.S. citizens during Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said last month that the shutdown reflected “the broad public anger at ICE’s attacks on our constitutional rights.”

In a March 17 letter to Congress, the White House outlined what it described as a compromise package. However, the offer notably ignored Democrats’ central demands regarding immigration enforcement procedures (via Independent).
