New Bill signed to rename Florida airport after Donald Trump
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday renaming Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport. Trump’s family business filed a trademark application for the airport name in February, with the name change set to take effect on 1 July if approved.
Before the change takes effect, the airport must submit a formal request to the Federal Aviation Administration, which will then process the change across various flight charting and navigation databases, and workers must update airport signs. Representative Brian Mast also introduced legislation to change the airport’s three-letter code from PBI to DJT, reflecting Trump’s initials.
The airport joins a growing list of institutions and programs bearing Trump’s name. The government has affixed his name to a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings accounts for children. The US Treasury also announced that starting this summer, US paper currency will carry Trump’s signature, marking the first time a sitting president has signed American money.
In December, Trump’s name was added to both the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the United States Institute of Peace building in Washington. Earlier this month, a federal arts panel approved a commemorative gold coin featuring his image. The coin is part of a series planned to celebrate the US’s 250th birthday.
DeSantis also worked last year to secure a parcel of land in Miami for Trump’s presidential library. Trump posted a video rendering on Truth Social showing an enormous mirrored skyscraper. The design features a presidential jet parked in the lobby, a gold escalator, and a replica Oval Office. It also includes rooftop gardens and a large gold statue of Trump. Miami-based firm Bermello Ajamil designed the library.
