Pete Hegseth ‘Not Speaking Truth’ to Donald Trump About War — Report

President Donald Trump continues to assure the American public that the war on Iran is proceeding “unbelievably well.” However, internal friction is mounting over how it is being described inside the Situation Room. Reportedly, the optimistic briefings given by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth may not reflect the more complex reality in the Middle East.

Pete Hegseth reportedly accused of lying to Donald Trump, officials say

Donald Trump has repeatedly described the Iran war as an “unbelievably well” effort, emphasizing U.S. military dominance. Pete Hegseth has echoed that tone. He claimed Iran has been “embarrassed and humiliated” and that U.S. forces enjoy “complete control of Iranian skies.”

However, recent developments have complicated that narrative. Iran’s downing of a U.S. F-15E fighter jet, followed by a high-risk rescue mission, has underscored that Tehran still retains the ability to challenge American forces. Trump himself acknowledged that a “heat-seeking missile” brought down the aircraft, though he described it as a “lucky hit.”

Officials and analysts claim such incidents show the limits of U.S. air superiority. They suggest that claims of uncontested airspace may be overstated. The episode has also pointed out internal concerns that Trump’s public statements may rely on incomplete or overly favorable briefings.

According to one administration official, “Pete is not speaking truth to the president. As a result, the president is out there repeating misleading information.” Hegseth’s claims that Iran has “no air defenses” and can do “nothing” against U.S. incursions have been challenged by both on-ground events and intelligence assessments.

Despite the criticism, the Pentagon has rejected the report. Spokesman Sean Parnell dismissed the concerns as “lies and propaganda,” while the White House insisted that Donald Trump has always had a complete understanding of the Iran war. Still, officials warn that simplifying the war through selective metrics such as launch counts risks overlooking more complex realities.

Iran’s evolving strategy, including more precise and targeted attacks and the involvement of regional proxy groups, continues to pose a big challenge (via Washington Post).
