Prince Harry Once ‘Astonished’ His Bodyguard, Recalls Expert

Prince Harry often speaks about what life felt like in privacy, especially the limits he faced while growing up in the public eye. But one royal expert claims that the Duke of Sussex also had moments of freedom and mischief that told a different story, and it includes one incident that left his security officer scrambling. The childhood tale has circulated for years, but it still stands out because it shows Harry as a bored little boy testing boundaries. Meanwhile, the adults around him tried to keep up.

Royal expert recalls Prince Harry was mischievous as a child

The Express reported that royal expert Charles Ray recently looked back on Prince Harry’s childhood during an appearance on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive podcast, after the prince had spoken in the past about enjoying simple family time in the US. Ray said he believes Harry “didn’t have a bad childhood,” and he shared a story featuring former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe.

Ray recalled, “I remember Ken Wharfe the royal protection officer and Harry would come up to him at various times.” He claimed, “He’d say, ‘Oh can I be a policeman today?’ And he’d actually give him a radio and so they would talk to each other when they were at Kensington Palace.”

Ray then described the moment that shocked Wharfe. He claimed that Harry had once “gone out of the gates and across the road to a record shop,” leaving Ken “aghast.” The bodyguard had to then “go get him.”

Additionally, Wharfe has spoken about the incident himself in a separate interview, describing how a day of trying to keep Harry entertained went off course. He recalled sending Harry to meet someone and eventually found him outside a famous music shop.

Whatever people believe about Prince Harry’s memories of growing up royal, Ray and Wharfe’s accounts paint a picture of a child who found ways to slip the net — even if it was for a short walk outside the palace gates.
