The connection between a franchise and its most vital players is seldom uncomplicated in the NFL. Hence, when it frays, everyone watches. Reports surfaced this month that Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II has requested a trade from the New York Giants. With the 2026 NFL Draft looming as a natural pivot point for major roster moves, the development has sent ripples through the league.
NFL player Dexter Lawrence reportedly wants a trade from Giants due to this reason
Two-time All-Pro Dexter Lawrence has reportedly requested a trade from the Giants as he and the franchise have reached an impasse over his future in New York.
According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, Lawrence’s trade request isn’t financially motivated. He wants a fresh start away from the Giants because the conflict has grown beyond contract terms.
With two seasons remaining on his current contract, the NFL star has been pushing for a raise above his $22.5 million average annual value since the 2025 offseason. The Giants previously added $3 million in incentives to his deal last year, and he earned $18 million for the season.
Earlier this week, General Manager Joe Schoen spoke about Lawrence’s status at his pre-draft press conference. Schoen described the discussions between both sides as “good conversations” and expressed optimism that they could reach a resolution to keep Lawrence with the Giants. He further stated, “We’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be.”
Negotiations, however, have stalled, and the New York Giants are now directing their attention toward the upcoming draft. Dexter Lawrence has elected not to participate in the team’s offseason activities.
The 28-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowl selection. He has recorded 30.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one interception since the Giants selected him with the 17th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Yet 2025 was a down year by his standards. Coming off a dislocated elbow that cut his 2024 season short, he posted 31 tackles, four tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and eight quarterback hits in 17 starts.
