Raiders & Rams Lock in New QBs Fernando Mendoza & Ty Simpson in NFL Draft

The NFL Draft always delivers moments that redefine franchises overnight, and this year, two of football’s most storied franchises made bold moves. In the 2026 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza, and the Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson as new quarterbacks.

Raiders picks Fernando Mendoza, while Ty Simpson goes to Rams in NFL draft

With the top selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders chose Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza out of Indiana to lead their franchise. Twelve picks later, the Los Angeles Rams shocked the board by taking Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13.

Mendoza kicked off a first round that sent 32 players to the NFL, headlined by four Ohio State stars going in the top 11 and nine offensive linemen drafted, tying the most since 2000.

The Arizona Cardinals made one of the night’s most anticipated selections by drafting running back Jeremiyah Love third overall. The pick made them only the third team in the last 20 years to draft a running back that high.

Ten picks later at No. 13, the Los Angeles Rams delivered one of the draft’s biggest surprises. They selected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, a player many analysts didn’t project as a first-rounder. Despite having reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford under center, the 38-year-old’s age has L.A. preparing Simpson as his eventual successor.

At No. 2 overall, the New York Jets grabbed Texas Tech linebacker David Bailey. That pick opened a busy first round for the Jets, who also added Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana receiver Omar Cooper Jr.

The New York Giants also doubled up in the first round. They selected Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese at No. 5 and Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa at No. 10. The Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Miami Dolphins joined them with multiple first-round picks.

Rounds 2 and 3 are scheduled for Friday, April 24, while rounds 4 through 7 will be held Saturday, April 25.
