George Clooney is calling on the President to lighten up a little. This comes the week after comedian Jimmy Kimmel cracked a joke on Donald Trump and his family. On his late-night program, Jimmy did a mockery of the White House Correspondents Dinner, calling the Trump’s wife, Melania, “an expectant widow.”
Jimmy’s mockery came days before the gala, where shots rang out, at the correspondents gala. The President and First Lady have taken exception to Jimmy’s humor. For George, though, it’s all in good fun.
George Clooney says “jokes are jokes” after Trump meltdown

We can’t take things so seriously. That’s the message George is delivering to the President, who didn’t appreciate the segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The Oscar-winning actor compared it to another remark that was seemingly taken out of context from White House employee Karoline Leavitt. “Jimmy’s a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired,” said George in comments to Variety.
George’s comments came the 51st annual Chaplin Awards, where he was being honored for his contributions to cinema. “Well, ‘jokes are jokes.’ But the rhetoric is a little dangerous,” he admits. George believes that when two sides disagree, things can get a little out of hand.
Trump did not take well to Jimmy’s humor. On his Truth Social, he called for ABC to fire Jimmy. The POTUS believed that Jimmy’s jokes ahead of the event were a “despicable call to violence.” His wife, Melania, didn’t appreciate Jimmy’s humor either, calling the comedian a “coward.”
The Chaplin Awards traditionally recognize Hollywood stars who speak out about political events. In the past, George has frequently advocated for freedom of the press.
