Reports ahead of the gala had already suggested she wouldn’t make an appearance, and by the time the night unfolded in New York City, her absence was confirmed. Speculation about her whereabouts began earlier in the day when London nail artist Marina Dobic shared a video showing a fresh set of “classy French tips” done for Zendaya, hinting she may have already left the U.S.
Entertainment outlets also reported sightings placing her in London with her partner, Tom Holland, on the same day as the gala. Just days earlier, she was in New York. She made work-related appearances, including a campaign shoot in SoHo and an event tied to her collaboration with the brand On.
Law Roach attended the Met Gala without Zendaya, which he acknowledged ahead of the event. “It’s one of the first times in my career that going to the Met is about me,” he said. Zendaya and Roach have built one of fashion’s most recognizable partnerships on the Met steps, making her absence even more noticeable.
Before taking a break, Zendaya had a very busy schedule across different cities. Earlier in the week, she was in Sherman Oaks supporting Holland at his Bero Padel Classic event. Then she traveled to New York City for work appearances. With all the filming, promotions, and events, her packed schedule likely influenced her decision to skip this one.
Zendaya’s absence stands out partly because she has become a fixture at the Met Gala in recent years, often delivering some of the night’s most talked-about looks. At last year’s event, she wore an all-white Louis Vuitton suit. Holland, notably, has never attended the gala, making her solo appearances all the more iconic.
