Sources told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice that Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are considering stepping away from the prominent role they held at the 2026 gala. The couple reportedly feel hesitant as criticism of John Galliano’s inclusion continues to grow.
Bezos and Sanchez ranked among the Met Gala’s major financial supporters this year, helping fund one of fashion’s biggest annual events. However, Galliano’s controversial past has reportedly made the decision particularly difficult for some of the gala’s wealthiest backers.
One source told Naughty But Nice that the couple’s concern focuses on protecting their public image and business interests. “They don’t want to be anywhere near a controversy that could overshadow the event,” the insider claimed. “This isn’t about telling Anna what to do. It’s about protecting their own names and brands.” The source suggested that Bezos and Sanchez could find it difficult to publicly support the event while facing questions about Galliano’s involvement.
Galliano remains a controversial figure in fashion because of an antisemitic outburst in 2011 that led to his firing from Dior and a court conviction in France. The designer later apologized and openly discussed his struggles with addiction and recovery. However, his past comments still draw criticism whenever major fashion houses bring him back into the spotlight.
A second source claimed Wintour continues to admire Galliano’s creative talent but acknowledged that some people cannot separate his work from his past behavior. “Anna believes in Galliano’s genius, but not everyone can look past the man and focus only on the work,” the insider alleged. “Some people simply don’t want to write a check and then spend the night explaining why they did.”
