Lauren Sanchez Raises the Heat in Plunging Look With Undone Strap at Met Gala

Lauren Sanchez Bezos arrived at the 2026 Met Gala with a story stitched into her look. Before stepping onto the garden-themed carpet as an honorary chair, she spent the weekend moving between the usual pre-Gala rituals and even trained with the New York Fire Department.

Lauren Sanchez’s plunging dress comes with a deeper meaning and history

Take a look at Lauren Sanchez owning the spotlight with an undone strap:

Her gown nodded directly to one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s most talked-about paintings, Madame X by John Singer Sargent. Painted in 1883, the portrait captured French socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau in a sleek black gown. What made the painting unforgettable wasn’t just its elegance, but a small, rebellious detail: one strap slipping off Gautreau’s shoulder.  That one detail caused a lot of controversy at the time.

The reaction was so strong that John Singer Sargent later repainted the strap back into place to make it less bold. Because of the backlash, he kept the painting out of public view for many years. When he finally sold it to a museum, he did so quietly, though he once said it was the best work he had ever made (via Vogue).
