The fearless leader of cable TV news has died. Ted Turner was a media maverick who revolutionized the industry and founded CNN. Known for his outspoken nature, The Mouth of the South, built a media empire encompassing cable’s first superstation. He also had a popular channel for movies, cartoons, and professional sports teams such as the Atlanta Braves.
In 2018, he revealed that he’d been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. This affects thinking, memory, movement, and behavior. It can also cause distinct hallucinations, and difficulties staying alert.
Ted Turner built a media empire
It is a huge loss for CNN to learn of Ted’s passing. More than just a TV news pioneer, Ted was also a big philanthropist. He founded the United Nations Foundation, which seeks to get rid of nuclear weapons worldwide. In addition, he was a conservationist and one of the foremost landowners in the United States. He created the Captain Planet cartoon to educate kids about the environment.
Ted departed CNN in the early 2000s following the merger between Turner Broadcasting and AOL-Time Warner. The future of CNN today reportedly has many current staffers worried. Paramount Skydance chief David Ellison is taking over. He is a supporter and friend of Donald Trump.
There are many things that people will remember Ted for, and being a visionary is at the top of that list. He had the idea of delivering news around the world in real time, at all hours. That bold approach took off, enabling him to earn Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1991.
Mark Thompson, the Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide, said, “Ted is a giant on whose shoulders we stand.” He says that they’ll take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on people around the world. Ted died on Wednesday, surrounded by family. He was 87.
