Shortly after Groban’s engagement made headlines, Perry shared a playful video of herself mock-crying while listening to her own hit song “The One That Got Away.” She had once revealed that the track was inspired by the singer.

The lighthearted clip quickly caught fans’ attention online, especially because Katy Perry and Josh Groban’s brief romance has remained a longtime pop culture talking point. Perry and Groban dated briefly in 2009 before eventually deciding they were better off as friends. Years later, during a weekend-long livestream promoting her 2017 album “Witness”, Perry surprised fans by revealing that Groban was actually “the one that got away.”
The confession quickly brought renewed attention to Perry and Groban’s past relationship, especially because Perry had never publicly linked him to the emotional song before. Groban later said the revelation surprised him. While appearing on Watch What Happens Live in 2018, Groban recalled discovering Perry had linked him to the song. “I was not expecting that,” he said at the time.
“That was a double-take and a spit of my coffee when I saw that,” Groban added that he felt flattered by the comment, but also genuinely confused because the lyrics did not resemble him at all. “I listened to the lyrics of the song,” he explained. “And I’m like, ‘I never owned a Mustang. I don’t have a tattoo. Are you sure that’s about me?’”
Groban spoke warmly about their relationship and said the two remained close friends long after their breakup. “We’ve been very, very good friends to this day. She’s the best.” Groban previously explained that their split happened because both of them preferred keeping their private lives out of the spotlight.
