Kentucky’s most expensive House primary in history just delivered its most dramatic result. The 12-year incumbent who repeatedly defied Donald Trump has now paid the ultimate political price, and he had plenty to say about it on his way out the door.
Thomas Massie loses Kentucky election amid Donald Trump’s criticism
Kentucky U.S. Representative Thomas Massie lost his Republican House primary on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. President Donald Trump handpicked and endorsed challenger Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL, who defeated the 12-year incumbent. The race became the most expensive U.S. House primary in history.
Gallrein ran on his military service and unwavering loyalty to Trump throughout the campaign. Massie, however, had repeatedly clashed with the president over key issues. He voted against Trump’s signature tax legislation, criticised the ongoing war in Iran, and opposed foreign aid, including to Israel. Trump personally visited Kentucky in March to boost Gallrein’s campaign, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also shared a stage with Gallrein on the eve of the election. Pro-Israel interest groups, including the Republican Jewish Coalition Victory Fund, poured millions into the race against Massie.
Massie addressed his supporters after the defeat, speaking for over 20 minutes before an energetic crowd. “We stirred up something. There is a yearning in this country for someone who will vote for principles over party,” he said. He also pushed back on blind loyalty within Congress, stating, “If the legislative branch always votes whichever way the wind is blowing, then we have mob rule.” He further teased a potential return, telling the crowd, “We’ll talk about it later,” in reference to a possible 2028 run.
Meanwhile, Trump responded bluntly to the result, telling reporters, “He was a bad guy. He deserves to lose.” White House communications director Steven Cheung added via social media, “Do not ever doubt President Trump and his political power.” Massie’s defeat follows similar ousters of Republicans who defied Trump, including Senator Bill Cassidy in Louisiana. Additionally, Trump-endorsed Representative Andy Barr won the Kentucky Senate primary to replace the retiring Mitch McConnell.
