Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said Cuba is ready to resist any U.S. military intervention. He warned that Cubans are “not afraid” and would defend “to the very last drop of blood” in response to renewed threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Miguel Díaz-Canel advises Trump Cuba will defend its sovereignty if challenged
According to Mirror, Trump has spoken about possible military action in Cuba since the capture of Nicolás Maduro. The former Venezuelan leader is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. He and his wife, Cilia Flores, were both taken into custody by U.S. forces from their compound in Caracas in January, reports CNN.
Speaking to Sky News about Trump’s renewed threats to take over Cuba, as per the Mirror, Díaz-Canel said the country is willing to “fight until the very last drop of blood” to defend its rights, independence, and sovereignty”. Adding, “We don’t want a war, but we’re not afraid of it, and we’re getting ready, so we’re not surprised or defeated.”
The 66-year-old leader continued by saying, “We are a peaceful country. We are not a threat to anyone. We provide a lot of solidarity to the world. Therefore, Cuba is not a country in conflict. We’re not a colony; we’re not going to give in our sovereignty or independence.”
He further stated that threats and constant rhetoric of aggression from the U.S. government amounted to a strategy of “media-driven intoxication” and psychological warfare intended to frighten Cuba and destabilize its society, calling it an outrage and an affront to the dignity of the Cuban people.
Cuba’s government said earlier this week that months of negotiations with the United States have shown no progress. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez told a news conference on June 30, as quoted by Al Jazeera, “The discussions between the Cuban and US governments are showing no progress.” He also added, “The conduct of US government delegations — generally respectful — has been accompanied by constant threats against Cuba, the application of coercive measures, and offensive statements regarding our country’s independence.”
