President Donald Trump is pressuring the Supreme Court ahead of a major birthright citizenship ruling. The case is about the 14th Amendment, which holds the power to define citizenship. He publicly called on the Supreme Court to side with him on his push to end birthright citizenship. Plus, he warned that a ruling against him would be a “disgrace” for the country.
The court is expected to decide soon whether Trump has the authority to override citizenship protections guaranteed under the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States.
Donald Trump urges Supreme Court to back him up
Speaking from the Oval Office on Thursday, Donald Trump made his position clear and his frustration clearer. “Birthright citizen is done by no other country, no other country in the world, the way we’re doing it — we’re a laughing stock,” he said. His claim, however, overlooks the fact that dozens of countries around the world also grant citizenship at birth. Furthermore, he also argued that the issue carries a huge financial burden. “Forgetting about the fact that it’s wrong, the cost of birthright citizenship is barely not affordable by our country,” Trump claimed.
Trump also tied the birthright citizenship ruling to the Supreme Court’s earlier decision to strike down his tariffs, which he says cost the country billions. “Now they have a ruling which is a much bigger ruling — birthright citizenship,” he told reporters.
The Trump administration has argued that the amendment’s phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” It was intended to apply only to formerly enslaved people, a reading that legal scholars widely contest. “This decision by the Supreme Court is a very big one,” Trump said. “They’ll probably rule against me because they seem to like doing that. You know, frankly, I’m not happy with some of their decisions.”
