President Donald Trump has drawn a hard line on what any Iran deal will look like. It would be nothing like the nuclear agreement Barack Obama secured in 2015. His comments came as talks aimed at halting the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran edge toward a 60-day ceasefire framework.
Donald Trump name-drops Barack Obama while talking about Iran deal
Writing on Truth Social, Donald Trump dismissed the earlier pact as a giveaway that handed Tehran “massive amounts of CASH” and a clear route to a nuclear weapon. He then turned to the negotiations currently underway, giving a description of what his administration would accept.
“If I make a deal with Iran, it will be a good and proper one, not like the one made by Barack Obama, which gave Iran massive amounts of CASH, and a clear and open path to a Nuclear Weapon. Our deal is the exact opposite, but nobody has seen it, or knows what it is.” Trump wrote.
The decision to single out Obama by name was deliberate. After all, Trump has spent years attacking the JCPOA, and he pulled the US out of it in 2018. By making a comparison now, he appeared to be addressing Republican hawks and Israeli officials who remain uneasy about any diplomatic engagement with Tehran.
Trump also moved to cool speculation that a deal was hours away. He said the framework “isn’t even fully negotiated yet” and cautioned against rushing. The US Navy blockade on Iranian ports, he added, would stay “in full force and effect” until both nations sign a certified agreement.
The negotiations seek to halt active fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively choked off during the war. Oil prices dipped slightly on hopes of a breakthrough, though the White House has made clear that Iran gets no sanctions relief without meeting its obligations under the truce. Trump’s message leaves little ambiguity. Whatever takes shape, he wants no one to confuse it with the deal his predecessor struck.
