Jon Stewart’s 2002 Media Warning Resurfaces After Stephen Colbert Cancellation

With Stephen Colbert’s time with CBS coming to an end after 11 years on the air, an old 2002 video of fellow late-night talk show host Jon Stewart has resurfaced online. In the clip, the veteran political commentator boldly predicted that comedians like him would eventually receive their marching orders from the same person. Now, Stewart’s 24-year-old statement seems to have resonated with netizens amid the current political situation, making the snippet go viral.

After the veteran TV personality hosted the final episode of his CBS late-night talk show, an age-old remark from his contemporary has started to make the rounds on the internet. The 2002 interview, featuring the 63-year-old comedian, saw him talk at length about the system. He even claimed that he and his associates in the field would “get fired by the same guy one day.”

“It’s about the system,” remarked a young Jon Stewart, as per the Reddit video. He added, “It’s not about the people who populate it, does that make sense?… It’s like any system. It cannot be effective once it gets away from what its goal and heart should be, which is to present you with information to inform you and to help you.”

Stewart also seemed concerned about his job in the old video. He asked the 60 Minutes host, “Am I gonna be fired? Am I part of your CBS family? Do you know? Can I be fired for this?”

A voiceover then revealed that Jon Stewart was almost “part of the CBS news family.” This was because Comedy Partners, a joint venture between AOL Time Warner and Viacom, owned Comedy Central back then. Notably, Viacom also had complete ownership of CBS during that year.

Accordingly, Stewart reacted, “It’s one joint venture, see? We’re all gonna get fired by the same guy one day, and it’s gonna be like a freaky, it’s like a cross-breed genetic between like Dolly the Sheep and one of [Rupert] Murdoch’s kids, and it’ll just rule AOL Time Viacom Warner Synergy.”

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart recently appeared on one of the final episodes of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. He even gave Colbert heartfelt advice, a farewell gift, and a warm tribute (via Entertainment Weekly).
